President Obama Declares April 'National Financial Literacy Month'

CPA Society Offers Revised 'Me, Myself, My Money' Financial Literacy Program for Connecticut High School Students

April is “National Financial Literacy Month,” and the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants (CSCPA) has revised its “Me, Myself, My Money” curriculum and accompanying delivery plan to assist the state’s teachers in the enhancement of financial literacy among the state’s high school students.

The program, entitled “Me, Myself, My Money – Edition 2” specifically addresses six categories of “financial reality” students must understand to ultimately achieve financial independence. The six lesson plans include

  • Credit Cards and Your Credit Score
  • Financial Planning
  • Insurance
  • Investments
  • Managing Debt
  • Money and Banking

As part of the initiative, the CSCPA is also making trained CPA volunteers available to assist in the presentation of the material.

“On April 2, President Obama proclaimed April 2010 as ‘National Financial Literacy Month,’ calling upon ‘all Americans to observe this month with programs and activities to improve their understanding of financial principles and practices,’” noted CSCPA Executive Director Art Renner, CPA. “This provided us with the perfect opportunity to make Connecticut aware of our revised and enhanced ‘Me, Myself, My Money’ financial literacy program."

This new curriculum provides teachers with a combined 18 lesson plans and 47 activities that are aligned with both the Connecticut Department of Education’s and National Business Education Association’s learning standards for secondary education.

CSCPA developed Me, Myself, My Money to improve the financial literacy of high school students by introducing fundamental concepts for responsible personal financial management. Following the overwhelming success of the first edition, the CSCPA now presents a new and expanded edition.

Each of the six new modules contains learning objectives, two to four lessons, each with multiple student activities, and instructor’s solutions. A total of approximately 500 kits have already been distributed to high schools, colleges, homeschoolers, and other organizations, and the kits have been used during freshman orientation at both Central Connecticut State University and Eastern Connecticut State University, as well as in the curriculum at the University of Connecticut, Waterbury Campus, and the University of New Haven.

High school educators – or anyone else – interested in learning more about “Me, Myself, My Money” can contact CSCPA Student Relations Specialist Jill Brightman at 860-258-0239 for information and samples, and can also view the materials at http://www.cscpa.org/memyselfmymoney.
